Is a Slight Bulge in S1-L1 in the Lumbar Spine permanent?
I am pretty sure that by a bulge, he meant a disc. Gonna clear up several points and then give you some info. An x-ray does not show muscle or discs. An MRI does. There is also no such thing as L1-S1. They do not contact each other in any way. It is probably L5-S1, which is the most common area for a bulging disc. They can spontaneously go back to normal, but usually won't. The bulging disc puts pressure on the spinal nerve that runs near it. That is what causes the pain. Physical therapy can work wonders for a slight bulge. Also, an inversion table is affordable at sporting goods stores. Using one regularly can help tremendously. Anti-inflammatories like Aleve or Ibuprofen can help with the pain. Tylenol is no good for this kind of thing. If the pain starts to radiate through your buttock(s), or down your leg, or if your leg or legs get numb or tingly, you should see the doctor again asap. That would mean that the disc has bulged further and is really pressing on the nerve. It could even require surgery. I would go back to the doc with this info, and press him for answers and help.
