In Spanish, does "carne" only mean "beef?"?

I'm a nutrition student and I'm assigned to give nutrition counseling at a hospital. All the patients are from Mexico, so 99% of the time, they don't speak English, so I counsel them with assistance from a translator. If I ask them what they eat, sometimes they will say "carne" but the translator just translates it as "meat." So can carne refer to pork too or is it just the word for beef?
